Understanding Spider Veins Q & A

by Bruce Hoyle, M.D.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are capillaries on the skin that have become dilated. This dilation gives them their spider-like appearance. Treatment is effective, but since spider veins are hereditary, patients may require re-treatments over time. They tend to be red, purple, or blue. They’re visible on the person’s skin, which can lead to the patient feeling some form of embarrassment due to the visibility of the veins. For some, pain or discomfort can be felt due to spider veins.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins are more common in women. Heredity plays a major role and so does the patient's profession since those who stand for long periods of time are more at risk. The use of birth control and hormone fluctuations may play a role. Spider veins are more common with aging. By age 70, 70% of the population will have at least some spider veins.

How Are Spider Veins Treated?

Spider veins are treated with sclerotherapy (injection of medication), lasers, or radiofrequency devices such as Vein Wave and Vein Gogh. Sclerotherapy is the gold standard to which all other procedures are judged. Most vein specialists treat with sclerotherapy, but this technique requires more skill. Med spas tend to favor laser because it’s an easier technique to learn.

Which Procedure Is Better?

Sclerotherapy was traditionally performed using hypertonic saline, which tended to cause pain and pigmentation issues. These issues are far less common with the newer drugs (sclerosants). Vein specialists may on occasion use lasers to treat spider veins, especially on the face.
